OK, here's the last one for right now. I don't know what to say about it other than it looks like someone cut the tip off of it. As you can see in the last picture the cavity extends all the way through the bullet.

Dnewbury2 is correct. More specifically, it is an unfired civil war era US .58 Williams Type 3 "Bore Cleaner" bullet which is missing the zinc washer and "thumbtack" from its base. The soldier probably removed those parts while he was carving off the bullet's top far enough to expose the upper end of the tunnel previously occupied by the shaft of the "thumbtack." Perhaps he did that to use it as a fishing-line sinker.

The Type 3 version was first issued to troops in late-summer 1863. They did not appear in time to get issued at the Gettysburg battle. (If somebody tries to sell you a Type 3 Williams "Bore Cleaner" bullet supposedly dug at Gettysburg, that claim is false.)

See bullet #159 in the updated "Handbook Of Civil War Bullets & Cartridges."

Thanks all for the help. This bullet came from a camp in the Hagerstown, Md. area. This area was occupied by the Union or Confederate army for the duration of the war.

I'm almost through thanking everyone for their help. Unless I find some more bullets I only have a few pistol rounds to post.
