This link seems to me to be the most plausible explanation as to what happened to the Bugatti. My money is that the plant it was on its way to be returned to was bombed and it was scrapped.

Here is another link that goes into more detail of the bombing locations. Someone with more knowledge than me and time could probably locate the original factory location and the bombing targets and find out the likely hood of the train location or the factory being hit. (Regardless overhead photos of Bordeaux look pretty bad for everyone) - I'm sure some elitist car was the last thing on anyone's mind.
