Buffalos Can't Swim
Howdy all,
Got a real welcome but totally unexpected surprise this afternoon. I was on my way home from hunting a not so local swimming area after a long not so productive hunt. Well in order to bypass traffic I put the gps to work to figure out a back way home. I found a new lake so of course I stopped to check out the swim area. The people in the park tell me not to go in the water cause there is broken glass everywhere. Boy they weren't joking. The bottom had a thin layer of rocks and under that was a gray clay. When I did manage a scoop it was full of multi colored broken glass. But seein as I am a hard head I gave it a real good try. I only managed to free a couple of targets from the clay. The first was the 1917 wheat. I am thinkin this is promising might as well give it a couple more minutes. So after a few more bottle caps I am almost ready to call it quits. That clay kills the feet when you are tryin to kick a scoop into it. But in the spirit of a true hunter I say one last signal. That one last signal was down a few inches in the clay and took a few tries to get. I ended up with a fist sized chunk in the scoop, and checked the hole to see if I got it. Well it wasn't in the lake bed so it must be in the ball of clay in the scoop. I passed the blob over the coil and bingo. So I set to washing the target out of the clay and woohoo a buffalo nickel. My first this year. And man oh man it has a date. It is a 1923 S. My personal opinion is nobody has ever really hunted this spot because of the clay. I hate to think I am gonna have to fight the clay and broken glass again, but I can't let this spot go to someone else. I am already makin plans for the next day or two to see what else shows up. The 2 coins were about 10 feet apart, so hopefully it is a honey hole. Hope yall are doin awesome in your hunts as well.
