First try to clean it with dish shop, household ammonia and baking soda as a scrubbing agent. If you can't see anything that way, you can try Nic-A-Date date restorer for nickels. It cost about 4 or 5 bucks a bottle. I wouldn’t suggest that on a good looking coin but that nickel is a gone’er.

vinegar and salt solution.... checking and scrubbing every 5 mins till u get the desired effect.. or soaking in worchestershire sauce will help,,,, then use Lime -Away.. they clean up fairly well at times.......

It seems the dates on the Buff nickles and the Standing Liberty Halves were raised higher than the rest of the coin as most I have found are worn off.

I found found about 12 or so buff's and only 2 don't have dates.

Good choice MJ!!!
I use the same, check your local coin shop!!! This is the Buffalo nickels weak point! The date takes off for the weekend and never comes back

Ant suggested it first, I was just agreeing with him.

I don't find coins, and have no experience with it but know folks here LOVE it... so I agree with Ant and you... Nic-A-Date is tops!

Every buff nic I have found in the past had a date... :)

Leave it as is . It took a long time to get in the condition it is in. Be kind. Actually it is now only worth a nickel ,if spent. As a couriosity it is priceless. Also there is little chance a date can be brought up without totally destroying the coin.
The coin went into the ground originally in poor shape, very worn, acid in the ground then took it's tole. There is a sayin : to turn a VALUABLE COIN into a worthhless ,(TO COLLECTORS) Coin: "CLEAN IT"
If you want a BUFFALO (INDIAN HEAD) coin in good or better condition, COIN SHOPS sell them for as little as $1.00 and up. Most old coins we find while metal detecting are not in the best of condition. Due mainly to the type of soil they have been in . Silver coins and Gold coins ,are the exception, and usually
(unless damaged in recovery) come out of the ground in the same condition as when they went into the ground. Be Advised,, DO NOT CLEAN ,scrape, buff, polish, or otherwise alter the surface of a coin( soap and water and tooth brush, OK.) before you determine the coins :origin, age. condition, metal type,Etc.
YOU MAY have a valuable coin, and dont know it. Coin collecting is an interesting hobby that fits right in with metal detecting for coins and other treasure. As in the treasure hunting hobby , research is necessary to fully enjoy the hobby of Coln Collecting.

capguntom is correct - cleaning it might/will destroy it's value to serious collectors.

But if it's gonna be a nickle worth a dollar, and YOU wanna know the date, and YOU wanna keep it in your "crap I found" box, does it really matter if you clean it?

I've cleaned every common silver coin I've ever found...

plehbah - does nic-a-date come in an explosive-putty version?

In the best (perfect uncirculated) condition the best buff nic can fetch $25.00

Average circulated buff nickles (un-dug) can be worth .30 cents.

Buffalo Nickels: (Rare dates: 1913-S, 1916 Doubled Date, 1937-D 3-Leg Buffalo; Scarce dates: 1913-1921, 1924-D, 1924-S, 1925-D, 1925-S, 1926-D, 1926-S, 1931-S)

I would not try to clean it. It is worth five cent in that condition but a little more in treasure valve. That coin earned all it's wear and tear. I'd put it in my keeper folder as is.

I see the "D" mintmark as well and the only valuable "D" is the 37 3-legged, and it appears your coin has four legs. So, I'd say pick up some Nic-a-Date and clean away.
