Multi functional buckles mainly were on the backs of trousers....much very interesting conversation in the past

They were to take up the slack of the waist,with a small piece of cloth

Somebody will probably tell ya,its a suspender buckle but I have never seen a suspender strap 1" wide,or even could see one being much smaller than an 1 1/2 wide,much smaller would dig into your shoulder

I don't know when they stopped with the points, but I do know most are colonial era.
