George and I went to a foundation site in the woods today to try our luck. I now feel Don in SJ's anguish when it comes to the greenbriar. The shoe buckle is probably late 1700's. The ornate buckle I'm not sure but wish it was a complete piece. The green thing with the serrated teeth says,
Patent 13th March 1849 and 8th July 1858. The flagpole top still had traces of wood in it. Pretty heavy piece. Two of the buttons are pewter I think. I was surprised to have such a nice date on the buffalo.
It was nice to be digging up goodies in sugarsand as opposed to the fertilized fields that wreak havoc on anything good. Till next time, good luck out there.

I don't think it is. I used to trap muskrat when I was a kid and don't recall seeing anything like that for trapping.
I'm guessing some kind of leather straps were used with it for something. Anyone have any ideas on this whatsit?
Thanks, Mike

That complete buckle is QUITE FINE! The broken one is really a nice piece as well. I think your two buttons on the right in the button photo are Tombacs--not pewter. The ones on the left appear to be brass. That's a great haul!

Looks like your on to a good spot. That buckle had a date of 18xx something. Is that the date it was made or just a patent date?

I have yet to find a complete shoe buckle like that. Plenty of broken ones. Dates between 1720-1790. The openwork one is also a shoe buckle of the same date range.

WELL DONE!

The thing in the last picture I'm not sure what it is, but yes those are the patent dates. 1849 and 1858.

The openwork and shoe buckle were found very close to each other. Also oyster shells in the same area. I'm shooting to go back Saturday morning.
Take care, Mike
