Hello All,

I found this pewter (button??) at a very old house site a few months ago. There were other early flat-buttons and floral civilian buttons recovered that day as well. I think there were also some pewter spoon fragments in the mix too...

The reason I think it is a button is its size and shape, plus the fact that it appears to have had an iron shank or attachment on the back (as evidenced by the rusty stain on the pewter).

When I was cleaning it, I realized that it had either an "I" or the number "1" on the front. The inner circular portion of the button is raised, creating a "domed" shape, but the very top of it (where the "I" or "1" is) is flat.

Any ideas are much appreciated.

Will, what is the diameter in mm? There are several somewhat similar Rev War buttons with style similar to yours but have not found exact match. That would be exciting for you if it were a Rev War button. I will forward this post to a Rev War button collector who is quite knowledgeable and if no one else replies before than I will get back to you.

If I found this in the UK, I would say it were 1780-1800. Civilian, not seen any similar Military.

In Don Troiani's book there are about 3 similar buttons with I or 1 and one with a L that looks like a one, but there is a slight difference. All American Rev War era buttons. I hope for Will's sake it is a Rev War button, if not, still a rarity here finding any pewter buttons with a number or letter on them, civilian or military. :)

I think location of the find (State) might be instrumental in a possible ID.

I think other buttons having the raised concentric circle give it hope. New discoveries are possible, wouldn't that be nice. :o

However, I wonder if the back was a shank or round iron stud.

Don,

Thank you for your reply. The diameter is a hair over 3/4 of an inch--so that's 19.1 mm. 19.2? We could just say it's close to 19mm. There is some rim loss on the button--just a bit in spots--and it makes it a little harder to measure.

I'll PM you where it was found.

Regards,

Just a guess from some experience, but maybe that is from the harness on a horse. There were a lot of very fancy saddles that came back from the Mexican American war. Some had every leather strap on the saddle covered in ornamentation. Just for consideration. ???

Was this ornamentation made of pewter or brass?
