Ok, that makes a little more sense.Crusader.. This type of plate isn't a functional buckle, they were decorative pieces on the cross belts. So the attachments don't need to be very stout since they are just attached to a leather strap as embellishment. Having said that, I've never held one that old or had the chance to even have a good look at one so I can't claim to know anything about the colonial period types but I have seen a few more modern (WW1) era that had similar attachments
I don't believe these were plates. How exactly would they function when all the have is the give-a-way bent over tags that went on leather. (identical to leather mounts like blinkers & horse tack brasses) There are only 2 good options, a horse blinker or truck furniture.
That seems right to me. It's identical in every way to horse furniture so it would be odd to me to replicate that on a person. It would at least bring you a few jokes from your army mates.I agree. I think it's like tudor rose buttons, a small % are military and the rest is some wishful thinking. Troiani says they're not, and he does have the current book out on such subject matter, so kind of hard to not accept that opinion.
