Found this on a site that has produced items from 1600's to civil war confederate buttons. Could it be a piece off a trunk or common buckle or even a early confederate marines buckle? It's 3 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide thanks

Excellent find. That was my post on the French and Indian to Revolutionary War Cross Belt plate. Due to the size of yours and especially due to the way the hooks were put on the back and the fact they are SO short, I wholeheartedly agree this is the same item, well, of course, not the EXACT same one as I have mine here. There is a lot of discussion about similar items being used on wood trunks, but "our" hooks are too short. My hooks are a little different, mine are "L" shaped. Good going.

A few more pictures of the back. Notice the dimple in the second photo

With this photo, looks like the same hooks as on mine. These were hand made. I'm sure what the dimple was about. You have your (first?) 18th century plate. Awesome and I'm glad to see one like mine come out. My other Rev War plate was a round lead filled one from the Brandywine Battlefield I found in PA back in 1988. It was almost 29 years between finds.

I don't believe these were plates. How exactly would they function when all the have is the give-a-way bent over tags that went on leather. (identical to leather mounts like blinkers & horse tack brasses) There are only 2 good options, a horse blinker or truck furniture.

Crusader.. This type of plate isn't a functional buckle, they were decorative pieces on the cross belts. So the attachments don't need to be very stout since they are just attached to a leather strap as embellishment. Having said that, I've never held one that old or had the chance to even have a good look at one so I can't claim to know anything about the colonial period types but I have seen a few more modern (WW1) era that had similar attachments

Ok, that makes a little more sense.

I agree. I think it's like tudor rose buttons, a small % are military and the rest is some wishful thinking. Troiani says they're not, and he does have the current book out on such subject matter, so kind of hard to not accept that opinion.

That seems right to me. It's identical in every way to horse furniture so it would be odd to me to replicate that on a person. It would at least bring you a few jokes from your army mates.

Ironhorse also found one at the same site, which makes the chances that much more unlikely it's any type of military plate. I always offer mine for sale, but strangely anyone who believes it's a belt plate won't make me a good offer. :)
