Very cool, they have a fairly large date range (British Lion head), but mostly in the early 1800s! Look for the other half, sometimes they are connected with a snake buckle as well!

I found it in a field in south ayrshire (Scotland) I used old maps to find old ruins and dwellings. I've only just started metal detecting and this was my first good find. I was back out today in the same field and found 2 coins

OK, I assumed you were from the US, which could have narrowed it a little depending on the context.

Was it a ploughed field?

If you placed it at circa 1800 you would not be far off. It is a very good start to you detecting aventure, well done!

Keep doing that field, just incase the rest is there, it's very rare to get the whole lot, but worth trying.

I look forward to more of your posts. In future, you might want to try the 'What Is It' forum for IDs, although as you got it yesterday, this forum is fine as well.

The field is used for grazing and hasn't been ploughed for years. Thanks for you're comments. There was a cottage in the field many years ago. It was demolished circa 1895. I will be going back to search the rest of the field in the near future thanks again

Killer lions head, like CRU said.....Go back and work that field till da' cows come home................HH

Nicebuckle, looking forward to your future finds
