Buckle type and date

I know very little about buckles and identifying what time frame they are from. This was dug in an old farm field in southeastern Massachusetts. Can anyone tell me anything about it?

I just realized that I did not post the picture.

That is actually a buckle shield. It was used to cover the buckle so the horse wouldn't get his tail caught in the buckle. If I remember correctly they were patented in the 1870s.

Yeap, but lots date to the early 1900s, so OP bear that in mind.
