I dug this buckle here on Martha's Vineyard, it is small ,the size of a quarter, it is worn very smooth. It has no mark but is nicely made. I have found coins in the same area ,KG's, but have not posted them yet. The house ,still being lived in, is 1714, it has 100+ acres that look like a golf course. Can anyone tell me what the buckle's function was ?? The tab swivels on the buckle and has a post on the end it. Thanks

I've got 3 or 4 of them like that none of mine are silver yours looks plated as it looks like I see the copper alloy in the spindle and chape part showing some. :icon_scratch: Also yours is missing the tongue piece to it.Anyway it's early & would be shoe or knee buckle.Circa 1660 - 1720.Nice find.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Thanks Pete, You got it ! I have many buckles as well, but none with the tab ,so it was a little puzzling ? The spindle may be a dissimilar metal. I was thinking it was plated as well and took a scribe to the back of it in a small spot and to my surprise ? it's solid, not that it has any value ,but it must have come off a nice shoe ? This sight has never been detected and is still with the original family name that settled on it around 1700. The family owner today has been gracious and welcoming us to detect the entire estate, I will post more of the findings soon. Thanks Again Rich
