Buckle or ???

Hello All,
Found this buckle yesterday in the same area where Civil War relics have been found. Not sure what type of buckle and if it is Civil War period. Any ideas? It measures 2 7/8" x 3 1/2", the side with the bent or angled end has a slightly tapered opening to it.
