This pair of red wool trousers with gold metal thread embroidery is part of a Zouave Officer's uniform worn by Colonel Harmon D. Hull, Duryee Zouaves (5th NY Volunteer Infantry) and the 2nd Battalion Duryee Zouaves (165th NY Volunteer Infantry). Unlike most Civil War uniforms these Zouave trousers are baggy with pleats front and back just below the waistband. The trousers are hemmed but not cuffed. Six small gold metal buttons, stamped on front "Brooks Brothers, N. Y.," close the fly. Six larger versions of the same button are sewn around the waistband on the outside. A short, red wool two-piece belt is sewn at the back, center just below the waistband. The belt sections are belted together with a two-prong, rectangular gold metal buckle stamped "SOLLDE" on one side and "PARIS" and "1864" on reverse. There is tan cloth interfacing around the waist and leg hems. Trousers accompany coat.

Looks about right. Everything's there but the same date. I can't read it between the two prongs. 18--

You can see the "IS" in the mid section where the right prong joins in.

Thanks kierdan, and the rest of you guys, I found a couple of dropped Union bullets, and a percussion cap.
In the same area. But, that's the first buckle I have found like that.

I would say your buckle belonged to someobody in the 114th PA :)

http://www.wolvesdenpro.com/114/history.html

Top of the page, the three blue paragraphs are links to the history of the 114th. The third one talks about them being at the battle of Five Forks and Dinwiddie. I learn something new everyday LOL didnt know a think about Zouaves an hour ago haha.

Bigcypresshunter, thanks for the mention, of banner or honorable mention.

You are welcome :) but looks like it may just be a suspender buckle looking at tymcmurray's post. Although the seller says the name on the buckle is Solide, I think he may have mis-read them. They look identical to yours. Including sayin paris. I guess I stand corrected :) Good info ty

sgtriker may not realize some of his $44.95 buckles are from a Zouave uniform. :-\

I suppose that could be true. When I was searching for Sollde buckles the Zouave was the only one I could find. Are we misreading the buckle? I'll have to check it again. I would have loved to have "nailed" this one, but I am not convinced that I did LOL

I think it says SOLIDE, which is the word SOLID in French.

I am assuming the Zouave regiments used this buckle in the early 1860's, but what we need to know is what years this buckle was made in Paris and if it was used by civilians. They appear to have different dates and I would think an 1860 Zouave uniform buckle saw action in the Civil War. Here is the same buckle but no info on it.

OK, I was interested in this buckle before. But, with all the research you guys have
put into it, Now, I'm really interesred.

Kierdan, I'm yet thinking you could be right, this buckle seems to be to heavy to have been
on suspenders.

Bigcypresshunter, In the area I found the buckle, the fighting took place in late 1864,
the war was nearing the end. Anyway thats kind of a time fram, if that helps any.

I have a friend that said he found a Zouave uniform button, in this area. I will see if I can
get a picture of it, if I can, I will post it.

I going to see what i can find out about the buckle, I look forward to seeing what else you guys
learn about it.
