Some sort of buckle found in my back yard, made of brass, swings freely. wondering what it was used for, not sure how it would have been mounted to anything, it has a rectangular slit about 1/8''x 1/4'' buckle.jpg

It looks like some sort of tie-off for a rope or something :dontknow:

Looks like sardines can opener.
Rations can opener... tab of metal goes into slot then as twisted it peels metal lid.
But ?
Cotter pin ringy thingy magiggy ?

Here is what I had in mind but yes noticeably different...

That's what I meant... heh not cotter pin.
I guess Triki got it.

Weird it has that "slot" in it... must be for locking it in place...
Which...
Obviously did not work due to it being "lost". heh

Actually I hadn't taken notice of the OP's remark regarding the slot - and I didn't originally notice it in the pics, so it might be some sort of can opener key as ARC1 suggests, rather than a linchpin.

Greg, is the shaft round or flat steel ? - if you can take your photos with the item against a darkish, non-reflective background - try dark blue and use natural light if possible. As long as the pic is in focus we will be able to see much more detail.
Cheers, Mike

I think its neither because I never saw a lynch pin flat on the business end and I never saw a tin can opener key that swiveled. Of course I could be wrong.

Im thinking some kind of tie down loop but I cant explain the slot. Heres a type for luggage.

Not a Lynch Pin, because the OP says it swings freely.

BCH, most of the lynch pins now days are flat on one side of the pin part. Just bought some at Tractor Supply a couple of days ago. Sorry I can't post a photo.
