Hello all, Well here is the story. I went to a late 1700 early 1800 house today. It is a huge house with a widow watch on top, and the carraige stable still in the back. My friends son who is 13 is now out of school wanted to go detecting. He likes coinshooting but lately has started to appreciate or be interested in finding older items. So I said sure and brought him along. We hit the back yard of the house hard. He went to a back corner that was surrounded by a bunch of flowering trees and bushes. His ace started dinging and he started digging. He came over a short time later with with a handful of items. He asked me what they were and I could only identify the zippo. He knows that I visit this website usually daily ;D and was hoping that I could post the two items I could not identify on this site with hope that someone could help out! I told him that I could and that you are all very helpful in the identification process. My guess is one is some sort of buckle. Anyone know if it is for sure, kind and age of it? And the second I think was part of a victorian brooch ??? Any help would be appreciated thanks. And I should add that the buckle like item still had some stubborn dirt on it, so I was not able to find any markings. I will check if needed. It is brass or copper....I think, and i'm not sure about the other item. And the worse part is I was skunked with only a few coins :) (modern). He is doing better than me!

Hello Sir, the buckle is a checkline buckle, used to drive horses when hooked up to a wagon.

I don't know when they started making them, but I can tell you they are still made today... and very common .

Check this link (bottom) : http://www.springfieldleather.com/WebPage.asp?pageURL=buckles_tack_2

The other item might be part of half a victorian ladies two-piece buckle... hard to tell in that condition.

It could possibly be from somewhere in the 1940's or 50's possibly even older

Thanks for the replies and the website. Gotta do some more research now but I think it may be solved  Good news is that it is probably from a time when there were horses there which was a long time ago according to the current owner.

Yup! You should be able to judge the age by the other known information about the place.
