I found this buckle today. It is about 2.25 inches wide and has a very small hook in the center on the back. I believe it is brass or bronze.
Any ideas of the use or age? It was at about 10 inches.

The permission is an occupied mansion on about 10 acres, formerly farm and mill and now mostly dense "newer" woods. It has been there since the 1720's and has had both British and Colonial heavy military occupation. There is iron EVERYWHERE around the main house as well as countless pieces of foil. My Minelab Safari sounds like a pinball machine. I get so many 35 hits that I have to swap to all metals to pick through a hit. In that mode, usually all 10s. Other than a few Indian heads and one 1898 Quarter, 30 hours and that buckle is the only other recognizable item found aside from obvious junk. I did find an iron sphere that I suspect may have been a cannon ball. It is so corroded that a solid ID isn't possible. I also found a cast iron pan so corroded that half and the handle came up, wafer thin.
Tough hunt!

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Can't help on the exact age but it looks quite old. If I had to come up with a date range i would say early-mid 1700s. But I realy have no idea, that's just a guess

Would that be considered a spectacle buckle?

Need to see the reverse?
First impressions - not Buckle

Maybe ornate horse tack? Used to run a strap through it? Middle is too thick to be a buckle and the ends are usually rounded on spectacle buckles.

Nice Save, and Continued Success to you on your site with the Minelab Safari. I also use the Safari and really like it. There has to be more artifacts scattered about. Go get em' and keep us posted if you will.

Very nice buckle, congrats!!

Bluntly - 35 years (experience) of digging & researching these type of items. However, the main clue is the type of tang used on the reverse.
Thanks for the additional info! Would I be correct to assume that this was of British origin?
Edit: Never mind. I somehow missed the links! The images pretty much confirm it.

I can't be 100% sure of its origin of manufacture but the highest probably is British, but can't rule out France or Spain.
It clearly is broken at each end & this missing pieces would have had tangs at each end.
