I found this buckle yesterday at a homesite that is listed on a old map as 1795 house. The site has produced a few KG coppers and early year large cents, blowhole buttons and the newest coin found there was the 1832 Bust Half Dime I found there this spring.

I am guessing it might be military, since it appears to resemble the outline of the US shield that was being used as early as the early 1800s. Also, perhaps it was part of the ornaments on a horse's bridle or something similar??

It is approx 1.5 inches by 2 inches, and is curved, not sure if it was bent to begin with but it is evenly bent.

Got a shot of the back of that buckle? I found one that resembles yours in Lithuania several years ago but hvae no additional information on it. My best guess is it is part of a saddle or harness system for horses. See my Pic below

Just a guess only, but I am wondering if it could have been a martingale. They often used the heart design.

That would be nice for another example with a possible identity, I googled horse bridle buckle and other variants of it and so far nothing similar.

Also, it is nice to see that the one OBX posted is similar, but not identical. I have found dozens and dozens of buckles over the years but none like this one, so whatever it was used on, was not common in this area. Another reason I thought perhaps military related, since those artifacts are not found here too often. I have hardly any doubt it was use on a leather strap, but not sure if horse related and/or military due to the outlined shape. :)
