As I was walking off the field today I hit a really good tone. Though I might just as well dig this piece of can slaw. Much to my surprise a green disc appeared. I gave it a quick wipe and saw two square nail holes in it. Yahoo was all I could think. Gotta coin. After wiping it off I thought it was a washer, real slick. When I got home I gave it a little brushing and saw a date, 1809. That's all I can see. Researching coins, a half penny is .925". That is the size of this coin. So do you think it's a half penny?

Wow man! That one is sweet...! :icon_thumright:
Sure 'nuf, that's cut nail holes...in-a-COIN...!
Wonder what it was the motivation to do so...??!!
Personalized, for sure...!

And, this could have been a Washer for a Carriage Bolt - to hold the ol' buggy together...! :laughing7:

Awesome find! Looks like a half cent to me. What did it ring up as on the AT Pro?

I've always thought that coins like this were used as a washer or similar due to either the coin costing less than the actual replacment part, or that the replacement part was not obtainable, so they made one.

Oldie for sure, grats!

A half cent made into a useful piece of hardware no doubt...
Cool find!

Nice 1809 washer! :laughing7: Either that or it was shot with a square bullet.:cat: Yes, half cent with a lot of character. Congrats--you need a bigger bucket at this rate! :laughing7:

A half cent is copper, not silver.

Not your common square hole that is actually rectangular....From type A and type B nails. Those holes were from period real forged square nails:thumbsup:

It's not silver. I lit it up with a 2500 lumen light so it could be viewed better. Here is another picture under natural light.

1809 half cent without a doubt. Can't miss that huge date on the 1809 and 1810 half cents.

What a great find! If only it could talk and tell us its history! Congratulations!

Nice!!!!! Congrats!!!! That coin has an incredible story it could tell:)

Right, the cut nails are slightly rectangular, not "square", like forged Rose Head Nails.....
