I have found a lot of buck and ball lately. Found one a while back that had three perfect indentations from the buck shot. I think this was made when it was rammed in to the gun, not sure. This might be a dumb question, but what came out of the gun first, ball or buck shot? Sorry for the ignorant question, would just like to know. Thanks and HH Nut

Bucks on top and ball on the bottom. The ball would sorta act like wadding and help seal the gases...d2

That's what I thought but wasn't sure. Thanks for the information.

It pays to check the hole for the little buck shots. They were mostly a confederate item I understand and pretty deadly in a non rifled barrel. I dig them here.

Bucky ball is in abundance in East TN, lol.

In N. Ga , I mostly find the 31/32 cal balls that's usually all that is left after the "ORH's" (original Relic Hunters) found most of the bigger Balls.

I still find them hard to confirm as being from the Civil War 'esp, when not in a known CW area.

I often wonder what the Caliber of Buck Shot used was in the late 1800's onward.
Sometimes I find the Smaller Balls with a Casting Spur (when Un-fired), even some of the later cast bullets & shot Have that nice white Patina .

It's getting to where when I dig a 31/32 cal ball I just can tell 'somehow , look ? feel? size?' that the ball is near CW period.
Hmmm.???
