I found this BSA pin.
On the back I can make out BSA
PAT. 1911.
Question is, how long did they use this design?
Any links to the history of these pin designs so I can approximate the date on this pin?
Thank you
Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Congratulations on an interesting find. You have a Boy Scout Tenderfoot rank pin. Traditionally given to parents of the scout when he achieves the rank. Some troops give them to the scouts to wear as a hat pin. The same style of pin is still in use today. I’m not sure when they had the patent date on the back so it may be hard to get an exact timeframe. Sorry I can’t be more specific. Stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.

17 years.

1861 on was 17 years....and at one point it was 14 plus 7.

Currently it is 20

Not exactly correct. Between 1861 and 1994, utility patents were valid for 17 years from date of issuance and currently its 20 years. However, design patents had a shorter duration of 14 years until May 2015 and currently its 15 years.

The 7 year extension possibility only existed between 1836-1861. Shorter extensions are still possible via PTA (Patent Term Adjustment), but only to compensate for things like delays in processing or publishing applications.

You forgot 3 1/2 years... there were three lengths.

I was quoting the maximum durations which could be granted but you're correct that 3 1/2 years is also a possibility... so I checked.

The badge design (originally British) was covered by patent number 41412 in America and it has a 'USD' designation as a design patent. The term granted was 14 years from date of issuance in 1911. There was a subsequent revision to the design in 1911, with the US shield and eagle added, specifically for American use. That's covered by design patent USD41532 which was indeed granted for 3 1/2 years.

The posted badge has the US shield and eagle.
