I'm thinking it's a garnet on matrix/host/pegmatite, nice find.

if that is self-collected, if I were you, I would go right back to that spot and look for similar formations and look for a similar crystal except green in color - garnet var. andradite var. demantoid (green garnet) is rare, really cool and worth some $$ - this one isn't worth much but demantoids are (the green in your rock is probably a serpentine/amphibole)

Wow- thanks! I know right where I need to go! It was self collected. I was having a rough day, and then found this! Just loved the piece and the shape of the gem.
