Brown Bess Lockplate 1756 - 1777 Timeframe

Ok.. I think this counts as a find for today... my digging buddy found a relic I had a few of.. so i was looking through my box of them, yes.. I'm being vague so he can post the item later, and I pulled out the lockpalte that has been.. well.. in a box of "stuff" for years... i looked at it a few years back.. thought "cool, I need to research this" and here we are today.... so.. here are the pics..

The date range.. lenght.. design.. screw placement etc.. all match up to the bess...

How did you find it? Looks pretty well preserved. Did you dig it?

no.. not dug... came down through the family.. in a netshell.. the stock exist too.. I just need to pick it up and double check that it fits... but it is suppose to be from the same rifle..

WOW...That is a real treasure. Passed down from generation to generation. Wish I had something like that Passed down to me.

That is a beautiful piece! The closest I have come is a musket ball fired from a Brown Bess, possibly fired during a skirmish in June of 1778.

For your reference, here is a lockplate from the 1780-1800 time frame. This is an early third model Brown Bess. If you need better pics, let me know.

thanks!! That is what I need now!! To find a musketball either dropped or fired to go with the display!!!

thanks!! It was one of those things that when I realized what I had... I flipped out!!! It was in a box of misc relics of years... so i will be going through EVERYTHING I have over the next month..
