Found this yesterday at my favorite hunting spot and need some help with it...it looks to be made of pewter, or possibly brass, and has a design around the center, which at one time looks to have had another piece, or a stone in it...the back is fairly rusted, and appears to have two points where a straight pin might have been...this piece measures just shy of 2" accross....any help is apprecitated!
As always, thanks for stopping by and taking a look!

I don't think so Zartan...there are no screw holes, and the back appeared to be a solid piece of metal..there was also a smaller piece of metal on the front near the hole, but it broke off..

I think you're right, I think it's a brooch or rosette... prolly had a stone or ivory carving in the center hole...

Well I could be way way off but is it possible that it was a small picture frame? Like this one.

They DID have doorbells pre-electricity... but they were hand cranked with a little knob, they also had little backings but there woulda' been screw holes...
