Yes you are correct, it was used in ship construction and the head is broken off and/or it broke in the middle as some were up to 12" long. Very commonly used throughout the 17th - 19th century. You should do a little research for your area and see what known shipwrecks are nearby and the year they went down, something that dense doesn't travel real far from the resting place of the hull.
