It most likely is Spanish, but everyone was using bronze spikes back then. I would say if you found Spanish coins, it most likely is from the same Spanish wreck. Keep working that area, especially after storms, or any thing that could erode or change the beach.

I'd guess that too.

Instead of taking time to research this though, I'd spend the time detecting your hot spot! You'll find your answer in the sand.

Thanks guys. I suspected it was old. I will be going back to my "hot spot" now, and, checking it periodically throughout the year as the beach changes. Thank you again for your input.
