I found the following spike. It is not attracted to a magnet. I suspect it is a shipwreck spike but do not know and do not know the age. There are 18th century shipwrecks in the area of the beach where it was found. The pictures do not show it well, but the shape of the spike is rectangular. I'd like any info on identity and probable age.
One picture has a ruler for sizing. Thanks.

Re: Bronze shipwreck spike?? Age or other details.

Nice find and you are correct, the pictures do not show it well ;D
Found on a beach in proximity to ship wrecks, I would put money on it being from an old wreck.
How deep was it and what level of the beach did you find it?

I can take a hint. Got some better pictures.

It came from low tide close to water, about eight inches down.

there are several wrecks in the nassau sound area north of jacksonville between talbot and amelia island ---wreckage debris and items are always washing up on the beaches there (* please note its a "protected aquaric preseve area")=== I know there is at least 24 british lumber trade era vessels ( from 1810 to 1816) that were recorded wrecked off of / around amelia island so theres lots of general trade / cargo wrecks in the area ( see singers book)-- plus theres several treasure type 1600 to 1800 time frame wrecks in the area as well. (that be from archive type info*) Ivan

yes it is a large nail / small spike used aboard ships -- appears to be bronzish * nice find

Just a copper nail or spike, they used copper nails and spikes because of iron rusts.

Nice find. I love the treasure coast beaches. Still looking for my first confirmed shipwreck artifact. Thanks for the link, too. Cheers.

Keep at it and I bet you get your first before the year is over. The winter months are usually pretty good. My best day on the treasure beaches was Dec. 23rd 1988. It was really cold.
