Hi, I'm new to this site and forum, very lovely site, and allot of experts, that brings me to my question:

I found this bronze piece with some others coins and cannot ID it, it's in very bad shape and cleaning it with some soap water removed
most of the dirt, but still no luck, please help. It's about 2mm all around larger than a quater dollar

Please view attached picture. thank you and good luck identifying this one!!!

It has some similarities to French colony coins which were primarily used in Louisiana (if it was found in the US).

Below is what I'm referring to. Note the part of "Benedictum" along with part of a wreath that can be matched up in the lower left of the picture on the left. And possibly part of "Colonies" on the top of the right hand photo, although Devan's coin isn't oriented exactly the same, but I do think it says "colonies". I rotated and enlarged part of the Devan's left photo for easier reading.

Welcome to Treasurenet Devan!!! If Tony agrees then I think this has to be it. There were two versions listed in the Blue Book of US coins, both dating to 1767. Although not very valuable ($40 in very good condition), its a great find!

Hi Guys, thank you for all your replies and identifying this coin for me, special thanks to NHbenz for his great effort.

This is really a warm welcome to this site and I will be making use of and giving a helping hand ( where I can! ) on this site.

I am from South Africa, and have quite extensive knowledge on SA coins, so if anyone has any of these coins, let me know!

again, thanks guys,

Devan

Bulls-eye Ben!!
Here's a pic of the coin in pristine condition. From this pic you can easily see that Devan's left image is in true alignment--notice the bottom fleur de lis. And by rotating Devan's pic to the left so that the "O" is centered on the top, the position of the cannons lines up perfectly. Great find Devan; great ID Ben.

Greetings,

I don't wish to ruff feathers but I think it may be premature to claim this one is "pegged" just yet - for just below that enlargement, note the clear design of a WREATH (part) which does not appear on the French colonial coins - I also hesitate to read that as "COLO..." too, look closely

index.php

and it looks like "C-O-L-G" or "C-O-L-C" and the first "C" could be a "G" too.

Sorry I don't have an ID to guess for this, but I don't think we can say that it is a perfect match for those French colonial issues, not with that wreath so apparent.

I think what NH enlarged is the wreath side of the coin rather than the cannon side... With the two sizes of letters--and the fact that you can see "COLO" on the other side (the un-enlarged one), I think we quite possibly still have a match here--and a correct ID.

Sorry for the mix-up. Mr. O!

You're seeing "COLO" or something like it on the wreath side, and I'm saying that it isn't there. However, EDIC does appear. See below. On the other side of the dug coin, you WILL see "COLO" in BIG letters across the top. And you don't have to get "testy" with me. I made an honest mistake--and that should in no way insult your manhood! My ONLY interest here is getting this thing correctly ID'ed. ::)

I hadn't intended to give this one another look, since I believed the original ID was correct, but after your comments I thought I would double check it... With the other side of the coin correctly rotated vertically, you can also make out an outline of one of the crossed cannons, as well as the lower part of another:
