Broken Pottery?

Does anyone know why there is all this broken pottery behind my house near the woods(200-300yards).. The pottery is also around the powerlines alot but what would it be doing there??..... The pottery is all broken except for one pot that was almost whole. Itis basically a big pot with a small pot inside of it connected together. The outside is like a red or mahogny color... it has a glazing on it but thats wut makes me not sure on the age... If? anyone wants me to take pictures of these broken pieces I will. Oh Yeh!! Did I forget to mention behind my house there supposed to build a nursing home??? They've been working on it for 4 YEARS and havent gotten much work done on it at ALL. So the first 1-1/2 feet are dug up on the ground so my metal detecting should be easy over there. Thanks VERY much............. Joshua from MA

More then likely their is a dump site out there> Which means there could be very old bottles and other treasures. If it is legal to do so take a forked rake out there and start raking the ground in that area. You might have a nice little hot spot there. You don't want to rake to hard as if there are old bottle you don't want to brake them.
? I love hunting old dump sites. So many different and old treasures. Hope that is what it turns out to be for you.

post some photos maybe we can compare it with photos in some of our books and get an idea of the age.

I have found Indian shards of pottery before. My old girlfriend at the time told me they used crushed clam shells mixed with the clay to help hold it together. She has an uncle that must have had a rich Idian area in one of his fields he plowed. You can see bits of white in the clay on the broken edges of the pottery. There was no glazing on the shards. They really look like formed bits of hard dirt with red and dull white pigments for the coloring. I have no idea what tribe made them, she lived in Dexter Missouri at the time.

I'll post pictures on monday... Come to think of it Gribnitz... Our town use to be an indian settlement... but because of the glaze I dont think it is Indian Pottery. Thxs though Can't WAIT to get those pictures on my digital camera :D Joshua Wright

that area might have been the site of an old pottery company, check the library for old plat maps and check to see what was on that propery!you might be surprised, and might have a very great area to be treasure hunting!good luck

Hey Thxs for that suggestion.. I've been lookin for old historic maps of my town and got down to 1880 ... on that map my street was there but it doesnt show any factories on this land. Down the street in "downtown" and that is where all the mills and factories were/are.. Our town is a basically in itself a historical landmark consiting of old homes old factories/mills and we have been throught the indian settlements and industrial revolution way back when in the 1700's .. SO who knows wuts in our town waiting to be found.. Oh Yeh George Washington stayed in a little inn down the street from where Im live and they just last month they tore the windows and stuff out so they can put a Bank in that spot... How rediculous like we dont already have enough banks why cant people walk 15 feet from the new bank to Unibank??? Well I'll keep you posted I'm gunna check the library for maps on monday (there closed on saturdays and sundays).

049 sure looks like an isolator to me. is that not a rail road spike next to it ?

048 looks like a heavy duty cable ending buckle

well i dont no wut ne of it is so u tell me:).... yeh i was wundering wut those wood peieces were ... maybe there was a building back there at sum point bc it looks like old wood ... theres also some old logs back ?there (they arent rotting tho)

do they use those isolaters nemiore??? cuz they have a value guide on the website url u gave me... was itr used on powerlines or wut?

Those all look powerline related. 48 looks like the anchor they use to anchor a powerline post to the ground. The others look like ceramics for insolators they use at the ends of powerlines.

I wouldn't mess around too much in that area. They may have taken down poles to run the cables underground up to structures.

nop ... the powerlines are still above ground the "upgraded" the pole to metal ones that have signs posted saying " stay awya high voltage above"... so i saty away from thee ones with the signs. But i wonder about the piece of wood with the screw and stuff in it and the screw next to the insulator. wut cud those be from?

Railroad areas can be good also. If it is no longer in service and there is some railroad ties or wood around look for the nails in them. They are called date nails and are very collectable. Also look around for some more of those insulators. Might find some nice glass ones.
? And just maybe this was one of the places that they used to stay at. If so there should be a dump site close by. Old railroad items are also very collectible.

there is a dump on ym street they dont use it nemore . we were gunna build a new skool but that keeps getting voted down the drain...

? If it were me I would be checking out that dump site. The older goodies are usually on the bottom.? :o

New-comer the items you have are hi voltage transmission line insulators. the small ceramic ones are used on wooden poles with one cross arm. the ones with the metal eyelets are used on large metal cross country transmission towers with even larger porcelain insulators supported fromthe single eye loop. these are replaced every so often as porcelain dielectric can develop arc over traces from the weather and air pollution . i believe what you discovered is an old site of an area where possably a local electric company service bldg. stood . my two cents HH :(
