CRUSADER is correct of course :) It's a "livery" button...

British Backmarks:

Hammond, Turner & Sons. 100 Snowhill. Birmingham (1717-1800)
Hammond, Turner & Dickinson. (H.T.D.) (1800-1812)
Hammond, Turner & Sons. (1850s)
Hammond, Turner & Bates. (H.T.B.) Manchester. (1850s)

Compare to other examples of their work here...

This is also a great source, and possibly narrows your find to 1840 - 1850 (early-mid Victorian) era when the company was known for it's "fine sporting buttons".

I just want to add to what Crusader and Jim have input. Tice's book says: "During the Antebellum and Civil War periods, the firm was a source of fine quality men's sporting buttons."

I would interpet that as 1850's thru the 1860's.

Sweet.... so it is quite possible the button was here during the Civil War.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I know that this is an old thread . . . but I just found it! :tongue3:

I found a similar button this past summer. The only difference is the back mark says, "New Sporting Design".
Thanks for your original post Chitlin and for all of the info! :occasion14:

I dug a Jacksonian sportsman button with this similar design on it a few months ago and posted it on here...
