In my humble opinion this is an officers rank badge from the british or commonwealth forces, probably late victorian circa 1890`s. I say officers due to the fasteners being claws rather than lugs and most likely worn on the shoulder.I could be wrong, i have been many times in the past.

Don't worry re the fleur-de-lis....their all over British badges. Shape is that of the 'Queens Crown' type...the arms curl up,over and down again (Queen Victoria pre 1900).
I've hundreds of British badges but none have the number of dots yours has across the middle, five is more normal. So I would have to say early Commonwealth.
Really nice find and not in bad condition for its age.

I have viewed coats-of-arms of British surnames and have found several containing the fleur-de-lis symbol(s) also.

Tinpan—

The crown is Victorian (See illustrations below.) It was used from 1837 to 1901.

I am also posting an illustration of an Edwardian crown. This same crown was used not only during the reign of Edward VII (1901-10) but also those of George V (1910-36) and George VI (1936-52).

Confirmation of these facts, and more information about British crowns and cyphers, can be found at:

All the best,

Go in a shako or helmet use for this crown. From past experience, I think you might find a match for it.. Haven't got time to do a search myself...But try that direction... :D

My message was to Tinpan. I am not "telling" anybody else anything.

The crown which was used during the reign of Queen Victoria is known in heraldry as the St. Edward's Crown. It was used by monarchs prior to her reign as well.

Had you read the information in the link that I posted, this confusion (unless willful) could have been avoided. I quote:

"The Queen Victoria's crown 1837-1901, (R49*). This isn't strictly Victoria's crown because it was used by most of the monarchs before her, but it is associated with her more than anybody else. Its' proper name is St. Edward's crown. "

However, the St. Edward's Crown is most emphatically not the crown which was used during the Edwardian period (i.e., reign of Edward VII) which followed the Victorian.

If such topics are of real interest and importance to the majority of members on this forum, then no doubt they will look forward to the textual documentation and many photos confirming those assertions, and will be appropriately grateful for them.

My only reason for posting was that Tinpan was told:
diving doc said:
Not Victorian, Edwardian, look at the picture. Can't be both, obviously.

Based on the facts and illustrations which I have posted, I believe that quite the opposite is true, and that it is indeed Victorian.

I will not be reading or posting in this thread again.
