BREWTON—In the early 1820s, Brewer’s Bluff, a high spot on the west side of the Pascagoula River, was the geographic center of Jackson County and the population seemed to be gravitating there.
County leaders thought it would be wise to move the seat of government form the home of Thomas Bilbo in the present-day Benndale, then in Jackson County, to this promising site.
The county’s first real courthouse and jail were built at Brewer’s Bluff and an early post office was established there. But the site remained fairly remote and Indian problems made travel to the east side of the Pascagoula River hazardous.
When Brewer’s Bluff did not live up to its expectations, the county seat was moved on the other side of the river to Americus in 1826.

Brewton a lumber town and was the site of the 2 nd. courthouse built in Jackson County. The first courthouse was in the ghostown of Americus. Brewton sat on a hill on the west bank of the Pascagoula River.
COMMENTS: Thick woods. Some residents in general area. Off Pascagoula River Road.
REMAINS: Nothing remains except part of the basement of the courthouse.
