Breaking: Four Dead In Mass Shooting at Navy Yard; Two Shooters Apprehended, One Dead

Multiple victims shot in ‘gun free zone’

Two gunmen have been apprehended after at least 10 people were shot, with four confirmed fatalities, at a Navy Yard in Washington DC. One of the gunmen is now confirmed dead.

Ed Zeigler of Naval District of Washington Public Affairs confirmed that two shooters were “down” after the rampage, following earlier reports that one of the gunmen had been cornered by police.

The incident has “no known connection to terrorism,” according to the Department of Homeland Security.

One of the gunmen was described as having a dark complexion, approx 5’10″ to 6 feet, 170 pounds and wearing black shirt & hat. He was carrying an AR-15 assault rifle.

Earlier reports stated that one of the gunmen was injured and had been identified.

“We were lucky he was a bad shot,” said Terrie Durham and Todd Brundidge, who were caught up in the incident.

The same Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives team that was used in the aftermath of the Boston Bombings has been deployed.

The shooting began at 8:20am EST, according to the U.S. Navy’s official Twitter account.

It is worth noting that Washington Naval Yard, like the rest of DC, is a gun free zone (victim disarmament zone), meaning only criminals like the shooter in this incident are able to carry arms. Workers in the building have been told to “shelter in place.”

“We urge citizens to listen to the authorities and follow directions from the first responders on site,” said the White House in a statement.

All departures out of Reagan National Airport were grounded as a result of the incident but have now resumed.

Barack Obama will make a statement about the shooting before noon.

“An active shooter was reported inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building (Bldg. 197) on the Washington Navy Yard at 8:20 a.m. (Eastern Time),” states a press release.

Two police officers are amongst the victims.

Just for information purposes Wikipedia defines an "Assault rifle" as "An assault rifle is a selective fire (selective between automatic, semi-automatic, and burst fire) rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine"
Unless this AR-15 has been modified it is NOT an assault rifle although Fox News correspondent Jennifer Griffin said the weapon is the civilian counterpart of the M16 which fires in 3-round bursts which would explain why 3 shots were heard when this all first started. She needs to move on to MSNBC or CNN and report to the gullible folk. She thinks like Bloomberg and Feinstein.

12 people were shot dead at a Navy Yard in Washington DC today. The gunman is now confirmed dead and has been identified as 34-year-old civilian contractor Aaron Alexis.

Authorities feared that two other shooters may be at large but both of these suspects have now been cleared.

Initial reports of two or even three shooters were subsequently dismissed, with NBC reporting that there is “no hard evidence” of more than one shooter. A subsequent report states that, “The prospect of a 2nd or 3rd shooter is fading but they want to make certain…that the scene is clear.”

The Washington Post reports that there were, “as many as three shooters.”

Alexis entered the building with a shotgun but was later seen by eyewitnesses carrying an AR-15 assault rifle, which he may have stolen from a police officer who he shot in the legs.

The alleged shooter is a “34-year old from Texas who is now dead,” according to NBC News, which adds that the, “FBI believes he used ID of a former Navy Yard worker.”

The incident has “no known connection to terrorism,” according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Poor guy lost his mind too. (Winkler)

Officers should be able to carry on base. I have railed about this over and over.. and if one officer is a traitor and a terrorist he would think twice before opening fire on other armed officers.

Looks like this is another "workplace violence" issue.
An idiot on Fox said we have to be careful how we fire people!:BangHead:

Remember "Alice's Restaurant"? Maybe we do need to find out where one's allegiance lies before allowing them to join up!

Shore Patrol is able to carry on base, always. FT Hood proves your theory out of whack.

What the heck was up with the "Alice's Restaurant" reference? Was it something about littering and 37 8 x 12 glossy pictures or the idea of a blind judge? :dontknow:

I guess I didn't know the shore patrol had such a large presence at FT Hood, in Killeen Tx? Navy is everywhere I guess.

I am Totally surprised at you Davest! I thought an aging anti war guy like you had heard the full version of that song! Here is the part I was talking about. Arlo was an idiot, and helped Fonda and Kerry be fools too.
"
Came to talk about the draft.

They got a building down in New York City, it's called, where you walk in, you get injected, inspected, detected, infected, neglected and selected. I went down to get my physical examination one day, and I walked in, I sat down, got good and drunk the night before, so I looked and felt my best when I went in that morning. 'Cause I wanted to look like the all-American kid from New York City, man I wanted, I wanted to feel like the all-, I wanted to be the all American kid from New York, and I walked in, sat down, I was hung down, brung down, hung up, and all kinds o' mean nasty ugly things. And I waked in and sat down and they gave me a piece of paper, said, "Kid, see the psychiatrist, room 604."
[ From: Song Lyrics ]

And I went up there, I said, "Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill, KILL, KILL." And I started jumpin' up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL," and he started jumpin' up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL." And the Sargent came over, pinned a medal on me, sent me down the hall, said, "You're our boy."

Didn't feel too good about it.

An' I proceeded on down the hall gettin' more injections, inspections, detections, neglections and all kinds of stuff that they as doin' to me at the thing there, and I was there for two hours, three hours, four hours, I was there for a long time going through all kinds of mean nasty ugly things and I was just having a tough time there, and they was inspecting, injecting every single part of me, and they was leaving no part untouched. Proceeded through, and when I finally came to the see the last man, I walked in, walked in sat down after a whole big thing there, and I walked up and said, "What do you want?" He said, "Kid, we only got one question. Have you ever been arrested?"

And I proceeded to tell him the story of the Alice's Restaurant Massacre, with full orchestration and five part harmony and stuff like that and all the phenome... - and he stopped me right there and said, "Kid, did you ever go to court?"

And I proceeded to tell him the story of the twenty seven eight-by-ten color glossy pictures with the circles and arrows and the paragraph on the back of each one, and he stopped me right there and said, "Kid, I want you to go and sit down on that bench that says Group W ... NOW kid!"

And I, I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W's where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after committin' your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the bench next to me. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest father raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean 'n' ugly 'n' nasty 'n' horrible and all kind of things and he sat down next to me and said, "Kid, whad'ya get?" I said, "I didn't get nothing, I had to pay $50 and pick up the garbage." He said, "What were you arrested for, kid?" And I said, "Litterin'." And they all moved away from me on the bench there, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I said, "And creating a nuisance." And they all came back, shook my hand, and we had a great time on the bench, talkin' about crime, mother stabbing, father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the bench. And everything was fine, we was smoking cigarettes and all kinds of things, until the Sargent came over, had some paper in his hand, held it up and said.

"Kids, this-piece-of-paper's-got-47-words-37-sentences-58-words-we-wanna-know-details-of-the-crime-time-of-the-crime-and-any-other-kind-of-thing-you-gotta-say-pertaining-to-and-about-the-crime-I-want-to-know-arresting-officer's-name-and-any-other-kind-of-thing-you-gotta-say", and talked for forty-five minutes and nobody understood a word that he said, but we had fun filling out the forms and playing with the pencils on the bench there, and I filled out the massacre with the four part harmony, and wrote it down there, just like it was, and everything was fine and I put down the pencil, and I turned over the piece of paper, and there, there on the other side, in the middle of the other side, away from everything else on the other side, in parentheses, capital letters, quotated, read the following words:

("KID, HAVE YOU REHABILITATED YOURSELF?")

I went over to the Sargent, said, "Sargent, you got a lot a damn gall to ask me if I've rehabilitated myself, I mean, I mean, I mean that just, I'm sittin' here on the bench, I mean I'm sittin' here on the Group W bench, 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug." He looked at me and said, "Kid, we don't like your kind, and we're gonna send you fingerprints off to Washington."

And friends, somewhere in Washington enshrined in some little folder, is a study in black and white of my fingerprints. And the only reason I'm singing you this song now is cause you may know somebody in a similar situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into the shrink wherever you are, just walk in say "Shrink, You can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out. You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them. And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in singin' a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day, I said fifty people a day walking in singin' a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement.

If you had the same knowledge as I do about physical security of military installations you would laugh. Oh, and the Navy hasn't called them Shore Patrol for at least a decade.

I apologize profusely. I was referring to two separate places, the Washington Navy Yard (Navy), and Ft. Hood Texas, (Army) Hell, CentCom has been unable to keep a homeless woman from jumping over the fence at MacDill AFB.

I'm still trying to understand what the reference to Alice's Restaurant is.

I worked on an army base for 3 years. Let me just say that I felt no safer on base than I do anywhere else in the US.

Why is that? Seems like these types of incidents could be prevented, no?

Well Davest, Arlo was making fun of the fact that the Marines asked alot of questions trying to ascertain if you had moral or ethical deficiencies.

By the Ft Hood terror attack and this one at the Naval Yard, it seems the armed services may have relaxed those standards for the sake of political correctness.

I guess this case has boiled down to the perp being a mental case and just going off. I don't know how this kind of thing can ever be prevented. It's sad and scary to think that some nutjob can just freak out some morning and walk into work and start blasting away. And let me add, guns are not the problem. If guns didn't exist they would use explosives, fire, hatchet, knife, poison or any other object to complete their mission. There isn't any way to protect a workplace 100% so this won't be the last time something like this happens.

Dem are partically responsible for their deaths.

It was Bill Clinton that made the idiotic choice to make it a gun free zone, taking away their right to defend their selves and their fellow soldiers.

We trust our soldiers to put their lives on the line to defend this country, to fly jets with full armament, to work on and guide our most sophisticated ships fully armed, handle nuclear material and missiles, trust them with most sensitive secret info and yet we can't trust them with side arms, that is simply idiotic. !

All a gun free zone is a place where evil people are guaranteed to have free reign to do as they please. It is like passing a law outlawing all door locks and alarm systems .......

You may as well have a lighted billboard outside that says unarmed defenceless citizens here.......

that statement is insane.
degradation of security is based upon the bush administrations contracting out security clearances...
where in the past, government organizations, FBI, ect. did the background checks for security clearance, todays government pieces out the background checks to private organizations.

this method has been in place since g.w.bush...
so unless gw is a democrat, place the blame where it belongs, at the feet of whomever did the background check, and whomever ignored the blatant criminality and mental issues this man possessed.
police called the nave and informed them the man was borderline...this information was ignored. only days prior to the shooting.

hate is such a waste of time...

It hasn't always been the case that only MPs can carry firearms on U.S. military bases. A mere twenty years ago, "gun free zones" made their way to these facilities under the watch of President Bill Clinton.

According to a Washington Times editorial written days after the Nov. 5, 2009 attack on soldiers at Fort Hood, one of Clinton's "first acts upon taking office... was to disarm U.S. soldiers on military bases."

Clinton's actions birthed Army regulations "forbidding military personnel from carrying their personal firearms and making it almost impossible for commanders to issue firearms to soldiers in the U.S. for personal protection."

In other words, thanks to Clinton, citizens who join the military to use guns to defend liberty abroad cannot practice their constitutional right to keep and bear arms while on active duty at home.

As the Times editorial board put it: "Because of Mr. Clinton, terrorists would face more return fire if they attacked a Texas Wal-Mart than the gunman faced at Fort Hood."

The same theme ran true at the Navy Yard in DC on September 16. Police were called after the shooter opened fired, and reports indicate it took approximately three to seven minutes for them to arrive. Each minute is an eternity when a lunatic with a weapon decides the "gun free zone" rules do not apply to him.

In 1993, President Bill Clinton decreed that US military personnel were to surrender the Second Amendment rights that they swear an oath to support and defend. Lott, writing in 2009, called for that policy to be ended.

Shouldn’t an army base be the last place where a terrorist should be able to shoot at people uninterrupted for 10 minutes? After all, an army base is filled with soldiers who carry guns, right? Unfortunately, that is not the case. Beginning in March 1993, under the Clinton administration, the army forbids military personnel from carrying their own personal firearms and mandates that “a credible and specific threat against [Department of the Army] personnel [exist] in that region” before military personnel “may be authorized to carry firearms for personal protection.” [In the cases of Hassan and Alexis, it was too late for that.] Indeed, most military bases have relatively few military police as they are in heavy demand to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan. [in 2009]

The unarmed soldiers could do little more than cower as Major Nidal Malik Hasan stood on a desk and shot down into the cubicles in which his victims were trapped. Some behaved heroically, such as private first class Marquest Smith who repeatedly risked his life removing five soldiers and a civilian from the carnage. But, being unarmed, these soldiers were unable to stop Hasan’s attack.

The wife of one of the soldiers shot at Ft. Hood understood this all too well. Mandy Foster’s husband had been shot but was fortunate enough not to be seriously injured. In an interview on CNN on Monday night, Mrs. Foster was asked by anchor John Roberts how she felt about her husband “still scheduled for deployment in January” to Afghanistan. Ms. Foster responded: “At least he’s safe there and he can fire back, right?”

It is hard to believe that we don’t trust soldiers with guns on an army base when we trust these very same men in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unfortunately, most of CNN’s listeners probably didn’t understand the rules that Ms. Foster was referring to.

when I was in the army, we were never allowed weapons on base...unless we were involved in unit activity's...personal weapons had to be checked into the armory, at FT Hood, texas.
that was 1969.

when I was in the army, we were never allowed to keep personal weapons in our barracks. They had to be checked into the armory. On a bright note though, if you wanted to go hunting you could check out shotguns or .308 rifles depending on what your were hunting. Thank you Special Services.

That was 1972-75, USARAL.
