Brass whatzit from the old school

I found this today and have have no idea what it is. It came from the old high school baseball field. It used to be a civil war encampment. They built some houses on the ground and them cleared the ground to build the school. The school was added onto 3 times before it closed. It has no markings on it. It is flat for most of it and round on the upper part. Because of the variety of action on the ground over the years It could be part of almost anything. I am stumped.
