Brass Whatzit Found Beside 1820's LC

Hello All!

2007 had its share of whatzits (part of what I love about housesite huntin'!), and some 2008 ones are already in. I found this item within feet of where KFB dug his 1820's Large Cent on our last hunt together. We found lots of melted lead and even melted brass in the area, but no a lot of iron--so we're not sure that we're on the spot that the house sat yet. Below are photos of both sides of the piece. Any ideas?

Looks like half the hangy up thing off the top of a clip board upside down? Monty

I don't think this one is modern. It is heavy brass. No modern items were found on that wooded slope--just the LC, melted lead, and this. Not even any shotgun shells. It's a puzzler...

AAAAAHHHHH! I think you may be right! I've seen those on every trunk--this one is just one side of the fitting. Bravo!

I DONT THINK TRUNK I HAVE HAD SEVERAL OLD TRUNKS AND NOTHING LIKE IT ON THEM.

IM THINKING TWO DIFFERENT POSSIBILITIES.
IT LOOKS AS THOUGH IT WAS RIVITED ON THE A LEATHER STRAP LIKE MABY A SINGLE PIN HOOK STYLE LATCH OR BUCKLE

OR

YOU CAN SEE THE WEAR MARKS IN THE SINGLE HOLE AND AROUND IT WICH MAKES ME THINK IT WAS SOME KIND OF A HINGE THE OTHER HALF MISSING

LIKE ON A OLD CICLE REAL MOWER THE ONES THAT SPUN WHEN YOU PUSH THEM.
