If it is a relatively heavy piece of brass, I would think your initial heel plate idea would be correct. The holes look like they would work for a heel plate and the nails went through in the right direction.

Thanks, Spats! Somebody opined that the central section would be used for a corrective plate. BTW, I wasn't sure, and somebody confirmed that on the top left corner, there is the word "out". I think it may indicate which side was the outside side of the plate. The points are a little stubby, but they could be worn, or the central plate which is missing could have had the actual nails and the three points were just for stabilization. I'll leave the thread unsolved a few more days if anybody else wants to chime in.

Thanks, DCMatt. I am guessing mine might be a lady's heel plate but its hard to tell. OK, I'll consider the problem solved. Thanks to all who replied. :)
