I dug these at a school that rests on the site of a civil war camp. I am sure they are not civil war items, but I found some tokens from the between 1911 and about 1925 so these might date from the same time frame.

The first item looks like it might be a small picture frame with a cutout that acts as a stand for the frame. The cut out is fairly flexible and It looks to me like a world war 1 style item, but I have no confirmed info on it and could use some input.

The second item has badly tarnished silver plating and is made of 2 pieces with an opening on one side. It is decorated on the top and says PAT PEND on the bottom for patent pending. It looks like an end piece for something.

If you can identify either of these items please let me know. Thanks in advance for any help you can give, stay safe, good luck and may your coil lead you to good things.

My first thought was a suspender button holder? But, now I'm having doubts as to what was hung from it. :icon_scratch:
Thanks for trying, but I think you doubts are well founded.

# 1 looks like a bookmark to me
#2 looks like a match safe.
just a guess .
I don’t think so on both. #1 is too thick to be a book mark. #2 is much too small to be a match safe and it has a side open so the matches won’t be safe.

Thanks to both for the effort, stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.

Your US item is uncommon and is likely the cover for a lock on a luggage bag, postal or bank bag as mentioned. Padlock covers would be heavier and attach differently (screws and rivets). The second item is for incense to ward off smells. The two items may have been related and are extremely interesting and early pieces dating to the Civil War.

Thanks for the input ColtsPop. I think it is possible the second item held incense, but I can’t find any like it on line. Can you send pictures of others like mine so I can compare them.

I doubt that your idea that the first item is a cover for a lock is correct. There is no way for it to fasten to anything else and the metal is malleable and not ridged as a lock cover would be. The small oval part on the front is an add on piece and can be easily removed. Not something you would find on a lock cover.

Thanks again for your input, stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.

It was not intended to be the lock. Its purpose was decorative

That is a definite possibility. I’m still not sure because it doesn’t have a hinge and the opening on the side would not be there on a Vinaigrette, but the top looks right.

Thanks for the help and the effort. As always, stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.

1 other option I ran across for #2 possibility is a antique stamp box/holder. Might give that a search.
