Brass U-shaped spike with forked ends. Very strange piece!

I found this in an area that's full of things from the late 1700th century until today. Not sure if its used for power lines or railway lines? The ends are super sharp

I was assuming a staple as well, but the size is very large and why the split spike on the ends and not a needle point?
Thank you for the ideas and comments this one has me stumped! I'll be OK stiff some flat buttons for ID later so excited.

looks hand forged, is the separated forks purposely done or is it a separation due to deterioration. Sometimes hand forged metals will splinter like that. I would hate to find that one digging with bare fingers,ow.

Possible the remainder of it rotted away -- perhaps a leather or wood section was in the mouths of the forks.
