Brass "U" Shaped Mystery Item

This "oarlock" looking item is solid brass and is very well made whatever it is. I found it in what I believe is the barn area near a cellarhole. I think the arrow shaped item is pewter but I don't have a clue... WAG would be horse tack... Thanks for any ideas on these two items, HH!! Jerry

The first one looks familiar. :icon_scratch: The second pic is definitely horse tack harness boss or saddle shield. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,364118.0.html

Thanks for the link BCH!! After a closer look,my arrow shaped item is silver plated brass and a perfect match to the picture you posted of the harness boss. Saw BB's picture of Sherman's horse with these decorations attached, just wish he would have posted Lee or Jackson's horse ;D

Re: Brass "U" Shaped Mystery Item

that type of item is used in transmissions to shift the gears by sliding them back and forth. It is called a yoke. Also used on line shaft clutches (looks more like yours) to start and stop the flat belts. etc Tony

Re: Brass "U" Shaped Mystery Item

It may very well be a line shaft yoke.

The first thing I thought of was a transmission yoke for an automobile too, but they are steel not brass (the synchronizers are brass though) and the "shoulders" are built up thicker.

Interesting!

a item like that could also be used to --"tip" or rock / move upon the "ears" if they were in a u shaped slot cut into wood --think of a long range artillery spotter telescope being used on a tropid with this item ibuilt into it to hold the telescope in it *

or it could be a "car part" once the horse and saddle era was gone --the iron horse took over the barn .

Re: Brass "U" Shaped Mystery Item

Thanks Tony and Sky Pilot for your initial id of this item being a transmission part. I wondered about that since it was brass but i guess it was high tech for a model T ;D Jerry

No problem, Jerry!

I dismissed it as well for being brass! LOL!
