DigEm,

E-g-S was my first thought as well but then I was bothered with the "g" being lower-case...I propose E-J-S. I'm also gonna quibble with the trivet idea. From size (from what I can tell in the photo) and design of the "feet" I think it may have been mounted to something hollow or possibly a thick wooden door. Let me explain...the wire-like legs would have penetrated the substrate, the round disks placed on the "backside", and then the wire legs peened down to secure it. Wa 'cha think?

HH to all!

I don't think it's a trivet either. I does look to me like it was mounted on something like a door or a front gate lamp post, etc. I also thought the initials were EGS, but I see what you're saying about the "G" and so it could be EJS.

It looks like part of one of those thingies they use on organs or pianos to hold the music book.

I agree with you guys... EJS

Geez.... Could you imagine the poor chap standing at the front door looking at that in 1885 going through the same ordeal?

"Is this EGS, EJS, EFS, E&S????"

;D ;D ;D
