brass top?

found this today, it is cast brass,looks like some sort of top or cover.looks like something made of iron was attached,top is smooth and flat.the bottom side has cutouts on each side and what looks like some sort of hinge or clasp. it is about 1/16 in thick.a little larger than a quarter.sorry for the scans but my camera is at home and i am at work.will take and post pics tonight. (i forgot) this came frome the same 18th century site.

Scanned images have no depth and are really hard to tell much. Any way to get a good photo?

Are you sure it's brass? Just doesn't have that look or patina.

Daryl Its brass allright.but the more i look at it, it looks more like some sort of catch for some type of box or pouch.

jrwill, I have found six of these at a very early site and they remain unidentified for sure. They are probably horse tack or at the very least they were attached to leather for some purpose. Check out this link:

Buckle Boy has a thread concerning a two holed brass object that I think may be related in some way. If you scroll back far enough in What is it you will find it about 3-4 weeks ago.
