Brass top lantern? or?

Ok not that its worth anything. I found this today on the beach in NJ I think it may be part of a lantern where the wick comes out. Now within a few miles from this one I have found maybe 5 other brass type tops that have the same locking covers. I thought they were salt and pepper tops little holes. The first two on the same beach did not bother me. But now 3 more and this, got me thinking they are from a wreck that had this type of cargo?
Size 2 1/4 inches x 1 5/8 inches oval top 1 1/16 diameter sticks up from main body 7/16 of an inch about .018 sheet metal brass. Now that top where the slit is,is three layer of metal one is part of the biggest piece, the other slides though and then a cap.

As small as it is, and with no apparent means for a wick adjuster, my guess would be the top to an alcohol lamp.
