if it is the side plate of the "connector" link, it might be made of brass to better FIND it in the legnth of roller chain to disconnect it? I know that a brass link would have helped me a lot of times when I was looking to disconnect a chain to work on it and had a devil of a time finding where it came apart. I would guess a search of the patent would be the definite answer on this one.

Wow nice old find sherman :o I would say maybe the master link in a bike chain, but did they have bikes and chains then? Also looks maybe like an electrical contact maybe? hmmm i would try a patent serach :)

This is a rope dog, used to tension the main rope on a tent. The rope runs freely through one hole and is tied to the other, making a loop. The loop is placed around the stake or tree and under tension it "bites" the rope holding it tight. Nowdays these are made of a piece of aluminum and are longer and round, like a dowel pin, with a hole on each end.

that would explain why there is no wear on it from other metal parts.
