As I was cleaning out my WTH box, I came across this brass (could be copper) thingie. I kept it because I dug it in a Civil War battleground. If the shape and pattern continued, I'm assuming it would have been round with a diameter of about 7+ inches. The staple like piece in the edge is not a modern staple. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Breezie

Maybe part of a mess tin :dontknow:

The 'staple' looks to be a hinge.

Mike, I thought the same thing, but do you think the 'staple' looks strong enough to be a hinge? Any guesses on the era?

LOL Tim ;D

Could it be part of an old eyeglass case?

Could be a miner's lunch bucket circa 1870's. The sprung part held the bale.

Well, after looking at this thingie more carefully, Scott, I don't believe it is a glass case because the edges are round, and if it continued, it would be about 8" in diameter. LastLeg, there were no mines in the area; actually it was found close to sea level on a CW battleground. Digginer, it could be the top to a bucket or a top to some type of container. At first I thought it was a mess plate, but why the staple on a plate? I guess it will go back in the WTH box until I see something similiar on TN. Thanks to all for your ideas and help. Breezie
