Brass Thing

I found this brass item at a plantation site yesterday with other civil war period relics so I feel like it is going to be period. As you can see, the bottom right corner has been broken off. It is solid brass with an attachment bar on the back. I don't know why this looks so familiar to me but it does. Is this some type of rosette, maybe?

I don't think it is a rosette .. It may be a carpet bag latch

Hope you can ID. I was just speculating maybe it's a piece from a saddle. Nice find.
