Finally got permission to hunt a three hundred year old plantation house. :tongue3:
Too late!!Picked clean :icon_pirat:Not even a new coin or toy car.Nothing but some iron.Moved to field next to house.More junk! But had a great day just being out there :icon_sunny:.I use the glass and pottery to make stepping stones for the walkways,if you are wondering why I keep it. ???This brass piece I thought might be a curry comb?Did have teeth all the way across at one time, very heavy.Just one of those (What's it).It rained all night so I am headed out to walk some of the recently plowed fields. Thanks :icon_jokercolor:

I will throw this out for your consideration, but maybe the comb is a lice comb. Civil war soldiers often carried them. Notice how close the teeth of the comb are. Curry combs usually are quite a bit bigger.

Thanks for info. There is a civil war site about ten miles down the road from here.

Are you wanting to know what all the items are or just some? I see a lot of iron junque, some bullets too small to identify, some buttons too corroded to identify, some glass and pottery shards, and part of an old comb. Is the comb plastic? Did they have plastic in CW times? M ??? nty

I love the comb, especially.

I think it is a mane/tail comb. The military was very fastidious about their horses manes and tails. I believe the lice combs were smaller ribbed, and closer together.

Here is a pic of one (not military), but you'll notice the spaces between the teeth. Mane and tail combs can have any length handle - some have NO handles.

No. One of the first synthetic plastics was Bakelite. You may remember Bakelite?
The very first plastic was invented around the turn of the century. It was called cellulite and was mostly organic.

That's a hair-straightening comb. It has threads in the end where a handle would have screwed on. It is heavy brass and was heated so that it would straighten the hair as it passed through it. I have a complete one with handle and I just posted a pic of one I found this weekend in today's finds. It's in worse condition, more like yours.

It's towards the bottom in this pic:

Edit.... Here's a pic I found of my complete one. There is also a old curling iron next to it.

That's a nice set, cheese. (and still a nice find of all the things you detected).

But, I still have to disagree. The curling iron - absolutely 100%.

The comb does not match, however.

Cheese,

Yes, I did. But, maybe you are misunderstanding what I said.

I know what a pressing comb is. (and how to use one).

What I am saying is that I don't believe your comb matches dirt diva's comb.

First, it doesn't appear to have a way to attach it to anything (handle). Secondly - and more importantly, it appears to have different teeth AND a curvature to it - which you will not find on a pressing comb, but you do find on a mane and tail comb.

It's not a big enough deal to get upset over. I just have a different opinion.

I'm not upset at all...hope you aren't either. You might be right... I thought the curvature was from being bent in the field (along with the missing teeth), and the handle part I can't see for sure to tell if it attaches the same or not. I didn't know there were any other thick brass combs than hot combs? Doesn't matter though, I just wanted to help a member by telling them what they have (or what I think they have). Happy hunting!

Thanks for all the info :icon_study:I think cheese is right,It's seems to be a match to the one he found.
It does have threads on end to screw in handle. Was full of dirt, cleaned it out this morning, found threads. And to Mrs.Oroblanco: Thank you for your dedication and service to our country :icon_salut:You are a hero

Yes, I remember bakelite. When our electric skillet cord caught fire it was made of that stuff and it released a horrible odor! Off topic, so, DirtDiva, very nice finds. Would look real good in a display case.
