I dug this at an old house site a couple years ago and have no idea what it might be. The site dated from colonial times to the very early 1900's. There were quite a few civil war military items dug there as well. Both US & CS. It is 4" long The opening in the end is 9/16" and the threaded disc is about 1-3/8" in diameter The disc is soldered on. I've see one other dug at a different site but the disc was gone. By the way the disc is soldered on it doesn't look like it would be able to handle any hard use

Thanks for trying. I forgot to mention that I have shown it to several people who know artillery better then me and a fuse has pretty much been ruled out. That was my thinking at first as well. I guess there is still a chance it is some sort of fuse though

Could also be an old gate hinge pin, spirals on outside would have allowed for better oiling, maybe had a resevoir on the inside then screw cap on. Is there any teeny tiny holes in the barrel part of it anywhere?...........NGE
