Hello everyone, out metal detecting yesterday I uncovered a spoon, it appears to be brass, this I determined from the spot that I nicked with the shovel. It is more in gold color than copper. All I can make on the Hallmark is; J B M *

Anyway, I have photographed the spoon, the Hallmark, and the brass scratch from the digger, hoping somebody could identify it and date it for me. Modern quarter is for size reference.

It was found in an area where other Victorian era artifacts I found, like 1876 seated quarter, war of 1812 era artillery button, and a Victorian era button with Angel face and wings. You can view those items from my previous post in today's fines.

I've tried searching the Internet myself but have had no luck.

Thanks and happy hunting.

What little I can say is that it was very likely a silver plated piece with the plating gone, rather than starting out all brass.
The pattern is Old English with Thread & Shell.

Lets use the right terminology. Only silver & gold have hallmarks. This was a makers mark that 'looked like' a hallmark & was silver plated. This would fool some people to pay a premium.

I've seen those very spoons in unburied condition in antique and thift shops with those marks. I think it's from around the 1st part of the 20th century. You may even ID those markings on the site 925/1000 as they have a section on silver plate marks.

Thank you for bringing the correct information on hallmarks to our attention. Also note the UK had added a system of ture hallmarks for the metal platinum sometime in the 1970s I believe?

So in the future I should refer to plated items with such marks as makers marks, Thanks.
