Found on a site which produces late 18th century to yesterday's stuff.

Made of rather heavy brass, about 4" long. The interior will hold about a 1" piece.
Civil War buttons and WWI buttons were found nearby as well as the top of a military "jerry can" lid. IMG_0649.webp

It is tapered and narrower at the top of the "ball".

Either a nob for a oxen horn or a harness piece....the name of which escapes me at the moment.

The harness piece if that is what it is the name is a Hanes knob.

Its shape and proportions show it to be a Hames Ball-Top. See below, a scan of a diagram from an 1897 Sears & Roebuck catalog, posted here in this forum a few years ago by HomeGuardDan.

By the way, a Whiffletree Tip has a slot in its narrow end, to hold a leather strap. See the other scan, originally posted here by Mojjax, showing a Whiffletree Tip in an 1895 Sears & Roebuck mail order catalog.
