Brass piece at 1700s house

This piece is 1 1/2 inches long.
It used to be attached to something on the wide end.
Notice the tapering on the side photo.

Is it leather inside? It looks like rivets.

It looks as if it was riveted to leather.

That was going to be my question also big cyprus. If there was leather, were you going to suggest next that it might be the end of a strap on a valise or something similar which required a small lock?

I didn't think to check it until you asked.
I took a pin to it and got nothing but dirt out of it.

It may have rotted away. I still think it was attached to leather. Are those 3 rivets?

I don't think it's a razor strop. My Grandfather was a barber and his was about 4 inches wide and about 1/4 inch thick.
My first thought was some type of hasp/latch for a trunk.

I don't know what it is but it is not one of a kind! Same size same tapered side view exactly. :icon_scratch:

Im probably wrong because I dont see any wear marks but I keep thinking it goes on one of these turnbuttons.
