Brass Oval

This oval is made of brass and has a 3/16 hole on one side and a 1/4 inch hole on the other. It is cracked partway on the outside edge, no seams are visible and has a deep patina. My guess was a knob but you never know, so I'm asking. Any ideas?

Absolutely. The part that fixes to the wood is broken off, but the hole in the other side is the telltale sign. I've dug several like that over the years.
